Developing diversity competence conference

The conference will be held on 23rd April 2015 at Our Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh on the theme of ‘developing diversity competence’.
By developing diversity competence – in our students and in our staff – we not only create a higher education environment in which all students can feel as though they belong, but we also equip them with vital intercultural and diversity skills that will enable them to succeed in a globalised and interconnected world.

This conference will focus on how we can ensure that they, and we, are able to negotiate this world in a manner that values, preserves, and responds to equality and diversity.

•         How do we develop student diversity competence through our learning, teaching and assessment practices?
•         How can we contribute to non-curricula activities to help our students develop diversity competence?
•         How do we ensure our staff are diversity competent so they can teach and support students in a manner that embeds equality and diversity?

The conference is free for staff and students from institutions in Scotland to attend. To ensure all HEIs have opportunity to send delegates, there is an initial cap of 5 places per institution, with a waiting list operating after that.

Workshop - Deep Reflection: Introduction to Contemplative Practices in H.E.

Tuesday 10th February 11:15-12:15
UKPSF: A5, K1, K2, K6, V1, V2, V3

There is evidence that young people are finding it increasingly challenging to concentrate and focus and think deeply. Contemplative practices employ a wide range of approaches to facilitate deep reflection within the context of a subject area, or more generally within the context of life. There is growing evidence that contemplative practices and mindfulness techniques have stress-reducing and health enhancing effects within a wide range of contexts. More recently there has been an expansion of the use of these approaches in Higher Education learning and teaching, particularly in the USA. Regular practice is likely to enhance concentration and focus as well as a more general sense of well-being. This workshop introduces the practice and some of the background theory

Workshops - Clickers – using personal response systems (Turning Point) for learning and teaching

Wednesday 28 January 2015
11:15-13:15
Room 1127
UKPSF: K4

Turning Point is a personal voting system that allows tutors to poll students and have the results graphically displayed as part of a PowerPoint presentation. The common name often given to these type of systems is “clickers” - the term “clickers” refers to the small handsets which are used to vote. Personal voting systems can make lectures more interactive – engaging students with the material being taught and giving the tutor an opportunity to provide formative feedback. “Clickers” have also been used to initiate discussions both peer-to-peer and with the tutor, and can be utilised to test students’ grasp of key concepts within the classroom.
