Short Course Sept 2012

Our short course in facilitating learning and teaching had a successful last week with a group of 10 participants, from a range of backgrounds. We started of with introductions through a couple of simple 'ice-breaking' activities, interspersed with 'process moments' in which we reflected on...
why we were doing this and how. This was  followed by an initial discussion around experiences of learning and ways of learning. Participants began the process of creating group posters depicting their views on this. We then divided into two groups for Teaching in Action 1, where each participant was asked to do a short (max 10 mins) presentation, which was filmed. As usual, despite endless planning, the technology needed sorting out, resulting in a delay, but also some interesting discussion about our reliance on IT to work and the importance of having a plan B so that, whatever happens to the IT, you can get started anyway.  Most people find it quite daunting to present in front of a small group of colleagues, even though they seem to have little fear in presenting in front of a large student group! I noticed how relieved and smiley everyone was over  a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit, after this was over!

Today we did the follow up, 'Teaching in Action 2' where everyone was asked to facilitate a 20 min interactive session.
